“I like to think of the surfaces of my paintings (both long and square) as terrains or landscapes made up of marks, colours and shapes. Processes of work on these material components are indicated, playfully and pleasurably, through taking lines for short strolls (as opposed for a walk as in Paul Klee’s famous dictum), little truant lines along the contours and byeways of patches of evocative colours, lyrical shapes and pictorial anecdotes. My paintings and drawings are not primarily meant to be seen as landscapes but rather as imaginary travelogues. If they have any point of origin it is in the long nostalgic poetic tract called Amours de Voyage written by Arthur Hugh Clough, and almost forgotten poet and critic Matthew Arnold. They comprise, if I remember correctly, little vignettes of loves and reflections as he travels in the classical landscapes of the Grand Tour tradition. Of course, these works are not meant as adaptations of literary sensibilities. I do primarily find inspiration from visual sources. Among many others I love the photographs of Cy Twombly and the ‘portraits’ of Howard Hodgkin!”
Christopher has exhibited his paintings in the West Country over the past ten year.
